about

“I Don’t Drive a Truck” tells the story of Burke’s experience growing up in Florida – an upbringing that was more alligator-dollar-store-trailer-park country than 4x4-buck-hunting-bass-pro-shop country.

Sharing the inspiration behind the song, Burke says:

“It’s a song about growing up in Florida – which gets dogged on for not truly being The South… and I think it also comes from having moved to Nashville as a non-traditional country artist and being expected to fit the standard Nashville-country mold. I was raised on Waylon and Willie and Merle and Hank - I spent my whole life in a small town in central Florida, my dad and I spent countless hours out on the St. John’s River fishing growing up, my buddies and I went muddin’ and had palate and tire fire parties in the woods…. folks are so quick to judge what it means to be “country” and I think this song comes from that place.”

lyrics

I Don’t Drive a Truck

Where I come from all the roads are flat
No 4-wheel drive in my Pontiac
Didn’t have corn fields, no red clay
Just a bunch of oranges, sand and waves

I never owned a cowboy hat, or had a realtree jacket on
But my resume’s a country mile long

‘Cause I’m about Waylon Jennings on a Friday night
Circled ‘round under moonlight
With the bonfire blaze and the bourbon lighting us up
I’m about sir and ma’am after yes and no
Driving fast down long dirt roads
Cold beer chillin’ in a solo cup...but
I don’t drive a truck

Well I’ve never hunted, but I’ve caught some Specks
Out on the St. John’s River with some real rednecks
I drink my sweet tea out of Mason jars
Got a couple cars that won’t start parked in my front yard

You might say it’s not the South but boy I’m telling you
My Chuck’s get just as muddy as your boots

‘Cause I’m about Waylon Jennings on a Friday night
Circled ‘round under moonlight
With the bonfire blaze and the bourbon lighting us up
I’m about sir and ma’am after yes and no
Driving fast down long dirt roads
Cold beer chillin’ in a solo cup...but
I don’t drive a truck

I’m still about Waylon Jennings on a Friday night
Circled ‘round under moonlight
With the bonfire blaze and the bourbon lighting us up
I’m about sir and ma’am after yes and no
Driving fast down long dirt roads
Cold beer chillin’ in a solo cup...but
I don’t drive a truck
Don’t drive a truck
I never owned a truck
I don’t drive a truck
